By simply removing food from other recycling materials, companies can save money and help create green energy.
Sales director, says: “Since its launch earlier this year our innovative food recycling service has really taken off and it’s been benefiting our customers in many ways, especially through diverting further waste away from landfill. We send all of our collected food to a local anaerobic digestion plant, Biogen, which breaks down the food to produce biogas and bio fertiliser.
“In a month’s trial, the food that was collected from our customers generated enough electricity to power 35 houses and make 70,000 loaves of bread.”
As part of the food recycling service, Ellgia Recycling invested in the creation of bins that are specifically developed to collect food waste, with rounded bottoms so that food doesn’t stick, and replacement liners that are provided on collection to keep the bins clean. Collections take place weekly to take food and packaging, including fruit and vegetables, meat and fish (uncooked and cooked), packaged food, canned food, bakery waste, canteen waste and kitchen scraps.
